With backgrounds spanning engineering, policy, research, and on-the-ground delivery, our judges share a commitment to recognising those who are shaping the future of SuDS. Their knowledge and dedication help us celebrate the individuals and teams making a real impact on sustainable drainage across the UK.

Andrew Keer
Product Manager, Blue Roof Systems, Axter Limited

With over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, Andrew brings a depth of technical expertise, as well as a passion for sustainability. Andrew is involved with industry guidance documents and steering groups, including leading the industrial working group for blue roofs within GRO (the Green Roof Organisation); CIRIA’s (Construction Industry Research and Information Association) Susdrain committee; and part of the technical committee for the LRWA (Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association). Andrew was also a key member of the Susdrain steering group that helped in the delivery of CIRIA’s guidance on the delivery of blue roofs (CIRIA report C817 - Blue roofs a guide to implementation).


   
  Bava Sathan
Partner, CampbellReith

Bava is a Partner and Civils Lead at CampbellReith, a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience. He has represented central and local governments in Mauritius and the UK, working on projects from water treatment to multi-storey developments. Specialising in housing strategies, sewage treatment, clean water and sewer networks, flood alleviation, and surface water drainage, he has championed SuDS for 20 years, contributing to the Non-Statutory Technical Standards and guidance. Bava is passionate about civil engineering, sustainable drainage, and environmentally responsible development.

   
  Charlotte Markey
Green Urbanisation Innovation Manager,
Polypipe

Charlotte Markey has spent nearly twenty years in industry and is currently a PhD Candidate at Exeter University investigating the adoption of smart nature-based solutions. She has lead EU and UK Government funded SUDs innovation projects and is currently the Innovation and Product Development Lead for Green Urbanisation at Polypipe Civils and Green Urbanisation.  

   
  David Charlton
Program Manager, Northumbrian Water 

David is Program Manager for Northumbrian Water and has 38 years’ experience working in the water industry. He is skilled in sustainable development, civil engineering, stakeholder management as well as Project Management. He is a passionate and a firm believer working in partnership to help achieve the common goal of flood risk reduction. David sits on the Northumbrian Integrated Drainage Partnership which is recognised nationally as a flagship organisation for collaboration between Flood Risk Management Authorities.

   
  Graham Fairhurst
Chair, susdrain

Graham started in municipal engineering in Lancashire, managing coastal defence and drainage projects before leading a major Mersey Estuary pollution scheme. He later worked in Scandinavia on infrastructure and sustainable drainage. At Telford & Wrekin Council, he led engineering consultancy, supporting Severn Trent Water and high-growth developments. He has worked with UK water companies on SuDS, flood risk, and drainage design and advised Defra on urban drainage policy. He now chairs CIRIA’s susdrain community of practice.

   
 

 

Ian Titherington
Senior Adviser, Sustainable Drainage, Welsh Government

Ian Titherington graduated from the Polytechnic of Wales and spent over 32 years as a Civil Engineer at Cardiff Council, specializing in drainage and municipal engineering. In his last decade, he focused on SuDS and retrofit SuDS, co-leading the Greener Grangetown project and creating the Cardiff Canal Quarter scheme. As a SuDS Approval Board (SAB) Officer, he helped implement Wales' statutory SuDS legislation. He is also an invitee on various drainage advisory groups. Ian now serves as a senior advisor on sustainable drainage for the Welsh Government and is a past Susdrain SuDS Champion.

   
  Paul Davis
Director, Elliott Wood Partnership Ltd

Paul Davis is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 15 years of experience integrating multi-use blue-green infrastructure into a diverse array of projects. A passionate advocate for multi-use, nature-based solutions, Paul collaborates with architects, developers, and local authorities to embed sustainable water management from project inception. He believes that well-designed blue-green infrastructure not only mitigates flood risk and pollution but also creates healthier, more engaging spaces for communities. Paul has contributed to industry events, research publications, and pioneering project innovations, shaping best practices in sustainable drainage and climate resilience.

   
  Paul Maddison
Flood Risk Manager, Wakefield Council

Paul has over 40 years’ experience in Civil Engineering in local government and involved in Flood Risk Management since 2005, he became Flood Risk Manager for Wakefield in 2012. Paul believes that surface water flooding is one of the biggest threats to residents with flash flooding is becoming an increasing occurrence overwhelming existing drainage systems. Paul believes that the use of SuDS is an important step in helping to reduce the impact of surface water flooding and has been a board member of the Association of SuDS Authorities since its creation in 2019.

   
  Sarah Mason
Nature-based Solution Strategy Manager, Yorkshire Water

Sarah is a Fellow of CIWEM with over 20 years experience in the water sector. Sarah currently leads the development and implementation of Yorkshire Water's Nature First commitment. As the Chair of the Yorkshire Rewilding Network and co-founder of the social enterprise Grow Wild York, Sarah is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for all. A systems thinker, she is particularly passionate about transforming organisations and communities to effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change. Sarah is a champion for the pivotal role of nature in achieving a just transition to a low carbon economy.

   
  Zorica Todorovic
Associate Director, AtkinsRéalis

Zorica is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Environmentalist with over 30 years of experience in hydraulics, drainage and sustainable water management. She brings best practice and lessons learned from numerous SuDS projects delivered in the UK and abroad to various public and private sector clients. These projects range from development of large catchment strategies and master planning to concept and detailed SuDS design including site supervision and post construction monitoring. She works extensively with Local Authorities and Water Companies across the UK in their paradigm shift ‘from grey to green solutions’ and identifying joint business cases to unlock match-funding of blue green infrastructure projects.
